All care providers know that poor sleep impairs residents’ cognition, physical function, and increases fall risks and preventable falls. This unique presentation will address principles of good sleep on reducing fall risks, especially at night, and three leading strategies to maximize residents’ sleep: sleep assessment, individualized safe environment, and continence management. When implemented, interrupted sleep, nocturnal awakenings, and falls are decreased along with caregiver burden and stress, and residents’ improved sleep, function and safety are realized. Combining the expertise of two fall prevention experts speaking from both a clinical and physical therapy perspective, this live session is not to be missed.
Correlate the principles of good sleep and its impact on reducing fall risk especially at night.
Develop and apply effective sleep hygiene practices and management strategies tailored to individual needs of residents to help prevent future falls.
Generate strategies to redesign a population-based approach for nocturnal continence, scheduled and assisted toileting while creating an environment for safe toileting.
